Tuesday will be a day of arrivals and get settled in at our headquarters hotel, the Hampton Inn, Evansville Airport, 5701 Hwy 41 N in Evansville, call (812) 464-1010 or reserve online at: https://www.hilton.com/en/attend-my-event/aerowarriorsgroupblock/. All king beds have fridge and microwave. If you want a queen room with those extras, you must tell them. Not all queen rooms have the fridge and microwave. We have a block of 50 rooms until September 17th. We will be sharing this hotel with the Eville DoRZ Gearhead club, so it will be secure. There is plenty of trailer parking.
Some planned activities include:
Wednesday: One hour drive to Vincennes, IN (note: there is a one hour time change here) to visit the George Rogers Clark Memorial; the Red Skelton Museum where there is a short video, a history of his life and career, display of his artwork of clowns, and some interactive displays (spend about 1½ hours at these two places; stop for a light lunch at location to be determined. After lunch we’ll tour the Indiana Military Museum with several buildings of interesting displays (about 2 hours here). In the evening we’ll have supper at The Log Inn restaurant where they serve family-style. This building was built in 1825 and is one of the oldest inns and stage coach stops in the U.S.
Thursday: Morning: possible guided tour of the LST-325 ship including the Main Deck, Troop Berthing, Tank Deck, Mess Deck, Galley, Stern of ship (guns and anchors), Wheel House, Officer’s Country, and the Captain’s Cabin. There is a lot of walking here, so comfy footwear is advised. Sherri said there is a lot of construction in downtown Evansville so be aware of that. Lunch will be at Nisbit Inn in Haubstadt. This is also an old stage coach stop with great BBQ and smoked chicken. Haubstadt is an old historical town and you can rent a golf cart to tour around the town. In the afternoon, we’ll go to the Vanderburgh 4H Center Fairgrounds to pick up our registrations. You can either hang around the fairgrounds, go exploring or return to the hotel and visit with members. Supper is on your own, or we could order pizzas to eat at the hotel.
Friday and Saturday: We’ll spend these days at the Shin Dig, but you are welcome to come and go as you please and you can even cruise around the fairgrounds and look at other displays. There is plenty of trailer parking and there will be food available. In the evenings, several hillbilly bands will perform.
Note: This event is open to all vehicles 1972 and older. Our cars will be prominently displayed along both sides of one of the main roads in the fairgrounds so cruisers will be able to see them.
Sherry is going to have updates on messenger that members can join and watch for further information. Also, we are planning to have very special T-shirts made up to commemorate our 50th year and this event!
